A few year's ago I visited Dubai. Like most people I walked through the city and was flabbergasted with the displays of everything you could lay your eyes on. The excessive spending that goes into that city struck me with awe. I wasn't sure if I should be impressed or totally appalled. The size of the buildings, the shopping malls and the cars. The huge amounts of Justasurferdudehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06466542568190927836noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2396737632687055016.post-88788607593131054342017-11-15T11:37:00.002+02:002017-11-15T11:40:09.452+02:00Breakdown
Let's face it, taking shots with a drone is very similar to taking shots with any other camera. Flying your camera to the point where you want to take that shot is slightly more of a challenge, especially if your subject is moving as well. But as they say, practice makes perfect....after many attempts I guess.
I'm still not near perfect when it gets to catching a surfer on a wave and gettingJustasurferdudehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06466542568190927836noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2396737632687055016.post-9048129840982857792017-10-24T17:48:00.000+02:002017-10-24T21:48:01.976+02:00What would it take to fulfill a dream?
I am sitting on a boat just outside Hout Bay and I am thinking hard. It is the Rebel Sessions Big Wave competition at Dungeons and I am there to take photos, but something does not feel right inside me. On the boat and in several other boats around me are more photographers who are all basically going to get the same shots which they are going to post and get an "ooh" and an "aah"Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2396737632687055016.post-53576932470917727302017-10-10T10:01:00.001+02:002017-10-10T10:06:01.515+02:00My two minutes of fame...
I never imagined the day when I posted my first IG picture that I would one day be invited to chat on a national television station's morning show about my IG account? But, I had my 2 minutes of fame..which for most part of it was nerve wrecking and felt like an eternity... on Expresso, a live morning show on SABC3.

I always had this image in my head about what it must be like out there in the ocean when you are a big wave surfer. The images you see in the media makes the hair on your back of your neck stand up. Like anything else that includes some dedicated athleticism I guess one will only really know when you are paddling out there yourself after years of training. I had however the Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2396737632687055016.post-3252643090279501712016-08-17T08:43:00.001+02:002016-08-17T08:43:31.019+02:00Just add water
Lately I have been taking most of my surf photos from the beach. I have a GoPro which I used for water shots, but apart from being very easy to handle and carry around, the wide angle lens requires one to be very close to the surfers. For wave photography that is not a problem and actually quite comfortable to carry around and diving through the waves with little effort, but I wantedUnknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2396737632687055016.post-32345703931541568622016-07-31T14:36:00.000+02:002016-07-31T20:12:18.744+02:00You want to be out there
I was quite surprised, and obviously pleased with myself when I turned a page in one of South Africa's favourite surfing magazines and saw a picture of mine under the "Shot Bru" section. This has been the showcase of local photographers for many years, all sharing not only their passion for photography, but also their love for surfing. As a kid I always looked at these pictures and Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2396737632687055016.post-85996084025233712912016-07-12T15:51:00.003+02:002016-07-13T12:54:11.185+02:00Let me photoshop your face for you
A client send me a picture that was taken on a holiday and that has sentimental value and asked me to brighten it up a bit. She wanted to enlarge it and hang it on a wall. Now there are lots of discussions going on about the authenticity of editing images. Is it fair when someone takes a pictures of a sunset and makes it slightly more orange or red? There are a couple of things that I unashamedly will admit I know nothing about...like the inside of a motor car's engine, the moves in a chess game.....and bird watching. Despite my passion for the outdoors, I somehow never became interested in our little feathered friends. Maybe they look too much alike and I never could bother to distinguish between the species, or maybe they Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2396737632687055016.post-69955765194831715752016-07-06T11:59:00.002+02:002016-07-07T08:05:22.192+02:00What Boys Should Know
So how long does it take to teach a 9-yr old boy to use a SLR camera? Well apparently not very long...
I took my son on his first "adventure photography road trip" with the hope of slowly introducing him to photography. I was a bit skeptic because it took me a while to figure out the difference between aperture, ISO and exposure and I did not expect a child to master that in one trip. It is widely believed that adventure starts outside of your comfort zone. When a friend offered me a "beauty treatment" at one of South Africa's top spas at Paternoster I knew there were some sort of adventure on the menu. First of all let's not get excited about the "beauty" part in my case, that ship has sailed and let us not get too technical on the definition of "adventureUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2396737632687055016.post-86660845804940363232016-06-20T11:37:00.004+02:002016-06-20T11:37:56.836+02:00
I've lived in Mossel Bay for a couple of years but still frequently visit it mainly for three reasons, family, surfing and photography. On all three reasons I can probably spend a day talking, but let me just quickly mention one...photography.
Mossel Bay, sometimes called "the drinking town with a fishing problem" is known for much more than just that. A popular tourist town Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2396737632687055016.post-12011971072151377612016-06-20T11:12:00.000+02:002016-06-20T16:01:14.898+02:00Show me the light
I have had a fascination with lighthouses since I was a kid. I think my fascination lies in the fact that it is usually situated at rocky outcrops and the idea of being out on the ocean at night and seeing light must be a comforting sight to any sailor. Despite my fascination with them, I have never really photographed them. If I did it was during the day and what is a Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2396737632687055016.post-3816337738301816672016-06-07T11:33:00.001+02:002016-06-07T11:33:28.865+02:00How to change your life...and maybe the world!
I honestly believe that one always feel better after some time in the ocean. My philosophy has always been that no matter how bad the waves were, you WILL feel better after the surf than before you went in.
Yesterday I went for an early morning surf. Because it was quite chilly outside I got into my wetsuit in the comfort of my living room, made myself a flask of coffee for that "Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2396737632687055016.post-67096233634779179392016-05-31T16:42:00.002+02:002016-05-31T16:42:58.827+02:00Evolving backwards to better your life
I know we all like to evolve in some way or the other. Usually making our lives better with new gadgets, new ideas, new challenges. But what is really making our life better, the better technology or the mere changes in technology?
I have always been an iPhone fan. My wife is a Samsung believer and although I have commented in the past on the nice quality of her pictures, I Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2396737632687055016.post-21121947223821923422016-05-19T11:15:00.000+02:002016-05-19T11:15:24.312+02:00The dizziness of freedom
Wayne Dyer said "Freedom means you are unobstructed in living your life as you choose. Anything less is a form of slavery."
We either have to work to support ourselves, we have families that require our attention, we live by rules made up by governments that tell us what to do and not to do, endless responsibilities, the list goes on. All these must be forms of slavery then. “Painting is just another way of keeping a diary.” ― Pablo Picasso
I am not Pablo Picasso, nor am I one that keeps a diary, but I do have a blog and I guess that is close enough to painting. I started blogging years ago when friends suggested I write my travel stories in a place where I can not only keep them, but also share them. On the white water rafting trip in Uganda we were entertained by our very experienced yet very funny guide, Peter. A local Ugandan with an extraordinary funny sense of humor and a possible career in stand-up comedy should the rivers in Africa one day dry up. You can imagine that he obviously had a lot to say when we fell off and he stayed on. We managed a few rapids well but usually lost a Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2396737632687055016.post-7252287463644041132014-03-15T20:14:00.002+02:002014-03-15T20:14:36.988+02:00The Nile Special - The Grand Finale
Last year September I wrote about my white water rafting experience in Uganda with Nile River Explorers. It's been a while since I posted something on my blog. Either my life just started getting boring or work has kept me so busy that I cannot find time to do stuff and upload stuff anymore. It was that of year again where 65-100 000 bikers (I wonder who counted them, but according to news sources) across South Africa participated in the annual Toy Run. This is a charity event happening across the globe where toys are collected and brought to a central drop-off point by bikers. These toys go to underprivileged children.
